This engine didn't leak a drop of oil. Easily rev'd to 4500.
Based on a used (hereafter referred to as U when used) dual relief AE short block. Not painted. I did not split the case in this rebuild because I was familiar with this particular engine.
Block had 10mm head studs & case savers.
Stock crank was 20 over on the rods.
A stock cam turned stock gears. Unknown (presumed stock) lifters. A new appearance (I pulled it out & inspected it) Schadek (26mm gears) pump pushed the oil.
New Mahle rod bearings.
Rimco weight mated, end to end balanced and re-bushed rods push new 87mm pistons in new cylinders with Total Seal gapless 2nd rings and Grant top & bottom rings.
New stock dual port heads (short reach plug bores) with 50cc combustion chambers. Stock valve train U consists of polished rocker shafts, cleaned rockers, swivel foot adjusters & HD adjust nuts.
Stock pushrods (checked for straightness & polished) U ride in new stainless steel windage p-rod tubes. Stock steel painted valve covers U finish off the sides.
A stock 12 volt 200mm flywheel with a German gland nut & washer holds down the back.
New oil drain screen.
A stock oil drain plate U with magnetic drain plug finishes the bottom off.
Compression ratio set to 7.8:1.

To go turnkey:
We added an alternator stand U with a chrome oil filler U and a new chrome oil fill cap.
Dual vacuum advance distributor U & a new chrome clamp.
A new pump fiber block & polished pump rod and an alternator style fuel pump U.
OEM vw painted cylinder tins U, a new Bosch generator w/ a new stainless steel strap.
Stock top pulley U with a new chrome nut & degreed power pulley U w/ chrome bolt. New fan belt.
OEM fat cooling fan U & hardware U.
Bosch extended tip W8BC plugs U & 7mm premium silicone wires U carry spark from a Bosch Blue 28,000 volt coil U.
Empi chrome coil bracket U with a new stainless steel cover & an oem vw 34 pict carb U on a stock painted manifold with cleaned out heat risers U make it go. New fuel filter.
An Empi chrome air filter U has a pcv elbow on top & is connected to the oil fill breather nipple.
A new Scat oil cooler adapter holds a new doghouse oil cooler in the oem vw doghouse style painted shroud U. Shroud has fresh air ducts plugged. New throttle tube in the shroud.
Early style 9 spring pressure plate U and spring type clutch disc U is held on by new bolts & washers.
