This is Jerry's F block based engine.
Parts needed to be able to fire this engine up included: fuel filter, fuel line & line clamps, 2 gallons of gas, a helicoil, oil pump face gasket, nuts & washers, exhaust gaskets, generator strap, coil mount & coil, coil wire connectors, spark plug wires, 4 exhaust studs, 3 qrts engine oil, rocker stand o-rings, fuel pump rod & gaskets and a generator post nut. parts cost = $127.00
Labor @ $80 per hour (5.5 = $440) to make the engine ready to run included: Repair 2 ex port stud holes & install 2 studs. Mount the coil to the shroud. Install plug wires & torque the spark plugs after checking for proper gap & coloring. Install gen strap. Wire the carb & choke off the coil with new wire & ends. Repair the top of the carb with a self tapping screw to close the top of the carb. Remove valve train to rub out dents in the p-rod tubes with a 3/8" wratchet extension. Install rocker stand o-rings. Torque v-train to 18#s. Set valves from a crazy 3/8" gap to .004 gap. Remove the fuel pump & replace pump rod with the correct one. Remove FIVE old gaskets and replace with 2 new ones. Fab an intake washer to fit beside the intake manifold to fill the gap between the block and the manifold. Install a nut & washer on the stud that holds the intake manifold to the block. Tighten the manifold boot clamps.
Labor to mount the engine on the test bench & fire, fix, fire, fix (you get the idea) & tune $250 flat rate. Wire the hot test bench for generator to charge the battery (for generator function test). Hook up the tach & ignition & plumb the fuel line to the pump. Install exhaust system. Zero cold cranking oil pressure after 3 20 second long chances. Remove the fan belt, crank pulley, breast plate tin & oil pump face plate. Remove the generator stand gasket that someone used as a face plate gasket. Inspect the pump gears. Lube the pump gears & re-install the face plate with the right gasket & wavy washers & nylock nuts to 15#s. Re-install the pulley & belt etc. Test fuel pump function. Fire up & shut off for generator moving problem. Repair fan shroud placement so gen sits flat & stops moving around. Fire up. Oil pressure is there (record cold oil pressure reading) now but the carb sucks air at the base gasket. Add more oil to bring to fill line. Remove the carb to repair the stripped out front stud hole with a helicoil & insert a longer stud there. Drill open the main jet for more top end fuel. Re-mount the carb. Fire up. Adjust the mixture screws for max idle speed and top end rev's. Record hot oil pressure reading. Point gap is off, shut down to adjust. Set the dwell (point gap) to 44 (.016). Fire up. Set the timing. Set idle speed screw & check distributors advance function. Check choke function. Record generator output 14V. Check for leaks, none. Record hot oil pressure reading 10#s at idle & 40#s hi rpm. This all cost $817.00 |
